Driving winds, lots of rain, and chilly temps over winter in New Zealand call for something that’ll keep us dry and warm.
That’s why we worked on something special this winter, so you can stay out there longer when the weather takes a turn. The Trailhead 2-layer Insulated Rain Parka and Jacket have been created as a cold weather version of our trusty and well-loved Trailhead rain jacket.

What's new with the Trailhead Insulated Rain Jacket?
The Trailhead Insulated Jacket is designed with novaLOFT insulation so you get the best possible mix of a rain jacket and a lightweight synthetic puffer.
The fully taped ngx 2-layer shell keeps rain out, while the novaLOFT insulation keeps the warmth in.
Breathable fabric and a long length in the Parka style make it the perfect addition for urban commutes or to throw in your bag when the weather isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.
What is NovaLoft?
Kathmandu’s synthetic insulation solution, novaLOFT is created with a blend of recycled and virgin fibres made to mimic down's loft. The fibres trap air and give you the same cosy warmth you'd experience wrapped in a puffer or snuggly fleece jacket, but will keep you warm even when wet.
When should you choose an Insulated Rain Jacket?
- You need warmth: The insulation in these jackets adds warmth, particularly beneficial in cold and wet conditions. They're ideal for hiking, skiing, or camping in colder climates.
- You want versatility: Insulated rain jackets can be used in a wide range of weather conditions, from chilly rain to snowy environments. They offer protection against both moisture and cold temperatures.
- The 80 gsm of novaLOFT insulation is less than our super lightweight Heli R puffer jacket to keep you light on the trail and still add an extra layer of insulation to keep you warm.
- You crave comfort: Insulation provides an extra layer of comfort by keeping you warm and shielding you from wind and rain. The trusted 2-layer ngx outer fabric is water and windproof so the wintery windchill won't be an issue for you during outdoor activities.
- You want to layer: Insulated rain jackets can be easily layered over other clothing for even more added warmth. They can serve as outer shells in a layering system, providing both insulation and protection from the elements.
- You need durability: Many insulated rain jackets are constructed with durable materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions, ensuring they last for multiple seasons of use.
When should you choose a regular rain jacket?
- You need a high range of movement: Insulation can add bulk to the jacket, making it less packable and restricting movement compared to a simple rain jacket. If you need a high degree of mobility, stick to your regular rain jacket with baselayers underneath.
- You want higher breathability: Insulated rain jackets are often not as breathable as non-insulated options, which can lead to more moisture buildup during high-intensity activities. Our Trailhead Stretch has pit zips and breathable, lightweight fabric.
- You’re concerned about weight: Insulation increases the weight of the jacket. If you’re counting precious grams and the conditions are variable, consider wearing a rain jacket, midlayer, and baselayer to keep warm.
- You are shopping for a lower price point: Insulated rain jackets tend to be more expensive than non-insulated ones due to the added warmth provided by the insulation materials. Regular rain jackets pair with mid and baselayers can be an alternative for budget-conscious buyers.
- You want more versatility in warmer conditions: While insulated rain jackets excel in cold and wet conditions, they’ll likely be to arm in mild or humid conditions. A non-insulated rain jacket with proper layers underneath might be more suitable.

Let's recap
Instead of throwing that extra fleece or down vest in your pack as well as your rain jacket, an insulated rain jacket gives you the benefits of both without adding extra bulk and multiple pieces to your pack.
If you are looking for an allrounder to use year-round the Trailhead Stretch Range might be a good option for you. However, with the cold season fast approaching our new and snuggly Insulated Trailhead will be there for you even on the wettest and chilliest of days the colder seasons bring.
