Recycle
your
textiles
It’s no surprise that we love the outdoors and want to protect it in any way we can. And because we're a B Corp, we believe business should act as a force for good, putting the people and the planet first.
We’re excited to be partnering with ImpacTex and its In-store Bins initiative.
ImpacTex is New Zealand’s most trusted, transparent and traceable textile recovery and recycling company, with a mission to eradicate textile waste globally.
Across 8 New Zealand Kathmandu stores you’ll find designated bins in store that you can fill with old, used or faulty Kathmandu gear. We’ll take it off your hands and make sure they’re either reused or repurposed and do not end up in landfill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why has Kathmandu partnered with ImpacTex and what is the program’s purpose?
This program aligns with Kathmandu’s circular business models pillar and our goals towards circularity.
Creating a circular economy is important to us and we are trialling ways to reduce our impact on landfill: this is a great way to extend our product lifecycles and keep them out of landfill.
More tactically:
- To support ImpacTex's efforts in diverting textile waste from landfill.
- To continue reducing our impact on textile waste ending in landfill.
- To extend the lifetime of the products we make.
What type of gear can be added to the ImpacTex bins?
Upparel will accept the following Kathmandu gear:
- Clothing items
- Hats
- Socks
- Shoes
What happens with the gear once the bins are collected from stores?
- Collection: ImpacTex collects the bins, and items contributed, and delivers them to an ImpacTex facility in Auckland.
- Sorting: ImpacTex sorts through each box individually and determines, based on each item’s condition, what is fit for reuse or suitable for recycling.
- Re-use: Any items fit for reuse are re-distributed to ImpacTex’s charity partners across New Zealand.
- Recycle: In the instance items can’t be donated, the garment is not fit-for-wear and has reached the end of its lifecycle, it will be given a new life through recycling: textiles will be shredded down into fibre and made into new materials or repurposed into new products. Examples: furniture cushioning, protective packaging and pillow filling.
